The family members of Hague fugitive Radovan Karadzic have handed in their personal documents to the Bosnian Serb authorities after
they were summoned to the ministry of the interior.
Radovan Karadzic's family members have been interviewed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Republika Srpska (RS), and have handed their personal documents to local authorities after the international community’s High Representative in Bosnia and
Herzegovina, BiH, Miroslav Lajcak, had ordered these to be seized.
At the same time, the Council of Ministers of BiH ordered that the funds and resources of fugitives from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the period of next 12 months. According to the official announcement, this measure refers to Radovan Karadzic, Ratko Mladic, Goran Hadzic and Stojan Zupljanin, who have been indicted by the ICTY and are on the run.
Tamara Maric, PR of MUP RS, told Justice Report that Ljiljana Zelen-Karadzic, wife, Aleksandar Karadzic, son and Sonja Karadzic-Jovicevic daugther and Branislav Jovicevic son in law came to the premises of MUP RS, where they were informed about the High Representative's order.
"There were no problems when we took their documents away," said Maric.
Maric stressed that the new order is related to the amendments of the Law on Personal Documents, passed by the High Representative a few months ago.
"On the basis of that, these four persons were given so-called additional personal ID cards, with which they can travel within BiH borders only. Therefore their travel outside the country is restricted. All security agencies, in BiH and in the region, are informed about this measure," added Maric.
The High Representative issued the order at the request of the ICTY and in close cooperation with relevant law-enforcement agencies in BiH.
"These four people are, in one way or another, the subject of orders by the Court of BiH, Council of Minister's decision, international financial and travel sanctions and criminal investigation concerning their role in the support network of Radovan Karadzic. These new measures actually build upon the previously mentioned measures," the OHR's announcement indicates.
"The international community has made it clear that it expects the domestic institutions in BiH to fully cooperate with the ICTY and to have a proactive role in apprehending the remaining indictees and in dismantling their support networks. My decision complements the measures introduced by local government institutions and other international actors," Lajcak told the media.
Since his first day as High Representative, Lajcak has put full cooperation with the ICTY on the top of his agenda.
