10 December 2007 War crimes victims from Prijedor have marked Human Rights Day by organising peaceful protests in Sarajevo.
Families of victims from the Prijedor area, and representatives of the "Izvor" non-governmental association, have marked December 10, International Human Rights Day, with a peaceful protest in Sarajevo.
Around a hundred protesters called for war crimes trials for all crimes committed in that part of BiH to be processed. Edin Ramulic, from "Izvor", described the protesters' method of transport to the event - in two buses - as a symbolic action.
"In Prijedor, most war crimes were committed by taking people out of their houses and transporting them by buses to crime scenes. In the case of a few most horrible crimes, the victims were taken by two buses and killed," Ramulic told Justice Report.
Prior to the protests, people from Prijedor met David Schwendiman, Chief of the War Crimes Section with the Prosecution of BiH, and explained why they were dissatisfied.
Carrying banners saying "You should be ashamed", "You have not filed one single indictment for war crimes committed in Prijedor" and "Prosecution of BiH violates the right to justice", people from Prijedor claimed that the Prosecution of BiH has not paid enough attention to this part of BiH. They claim that, although some investigations are underway, no indictments have been filed yet.
"We are afraid that the time will pass and nothing will be processed," said Ramulic.
The trial against Zeljko Mejakic, Momcilo Gruban, Dusan Fustar and Dusko Knezevic is the only process currently being conducted before the Court of BiH for crimes committed on the territory of Prijedor municipality.
At the request of the Hague tribunal prosecution, this case was referred to Sarajevo for further processing in July 2005. In May 2006 the four indictees were transferred to Sarajevo from the tribunal's detention unit in Scheveningen.
To date, the Hague tribunal has sentenced nine persons to a total of 83 years imprisonment for crimes committed in Omarska and Keraterm detention camps.
