Radmilo Vukovic's trial began

19 January 2007  Both Defence and Prosecution present opening statements in the trial of Radmilo Vukovic, charged with rape committed in Foca, despite his non-appearance in court.

Vojo Radovic, defence attorney of Radmilo Vukovic, a former member of the Army of Republika Srpska charged with the multiple rape of a Bosniak woman in Foca, has proposed closing the Court to the public during the trial.
Vukovic has requested that the presentation of opening statements by both is done in camera.

”I think that it would be best to close the trial for the public because I will be presenting facts from the private lives of both the victim and the indictee”, Vojo Radovic said.

The Trial Chamber denied this request, but accepted to exclude the public only during the testimony of the protected victim with whose rape Vukovic is charged.

According to the indictment, on June 10th, 1992 Radmilo Vukovic took victim “A” from her apartment in Miljevina, Foca municipality, and took her to another apartment where he raped her.
It is further stated in the indictment that Vukovic abused her and threatened her with death if she told anyone what had happened and told her that she had to respond to his calls in the future.
Victim “A” was made to do this on another five or six occasion, according to the indictment, and was raped each time.
After being expelled from Foca, on February 20th, 1993 she gave birth to a boy in Gorazde hospital.
The Prosecution announced her testimony, the testimony of her sister and the presentation of 21 pieces of physical evidence.
”It is quite a small number of evidence, but sufficient for the Trial Chamber to make the right decision”, Prosecutor Behaija Krnjic said.
The defence attorney did not want to disclose details during the opening statement because the trial was not closed to the public, but announced that he will present that part in his closing address.
”We will prove that there was a certain relationship between Vukovic and the victim before the war started”, Radovic said, adding that for now the Defence is planning to question three witnesses.
The trial will be continued on February 6th when protected witnesses will testify.
