Week ahead: Trials for Trusina and Doboj Crimes Begin

03 September 2010

The trials of seven indictees charged with crimes committed in the Konjic and Doboj area are due to begin before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina next week.

On Wednesday, September 8 the trial is due to begin in the case of Mensur Memic, Dzevad Salcin, Nedzad Hodzic, Nihad Bojadzic, Senad Hakalovic and Zulfikar Alispago, former members of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ABiH, who are charged with participation in crimes committed against Bosnian Croats in Trusina village, Konjic municipality.
Memic, Salcin, Hodzic and Bojadzic, former members of the “Zulfikar” Special Purposes Squad with the ABiH Main Command Headquarters, and Hakalovic, former member of the “Neretvica” 45th Mountain Brigade with the ARBiH, are charged with participation in “a planned and prepared” attack. Alispago, former Commander of the “Zulfikar” Squad, is charged with having known about the attack and failing to undertake necessary and reasonable measures to punish his subordinates.
On the same day Franc Kos, Stanko Kojic, Vlastimir Golijan and Zoran Goronja, former members of the 10th Reconnaissance Squad with the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, are due to enter their plea on charges that they participated in genocide committed in Srebrenica. The four indictees allegedly participated in the murder of more than 800 men and boys at Branjevo military farm in Pilica, Zvornik municipality, in July 1995.
On September 7 the trial is due to begin in the case of Miodrag Markovic, former VRS member, who is charged with having raped a girl, who was minor at the time, in Doboj municipality in July 1992.
On the same day the Defence is expected to continue presenting its introductory arguments at the retrial of Sreten Lazarevic, Dragan Stanojevic, Mile Markovic and Slobodan Ostojic, former members of the reserve police forces with the Public Safety Station in Zvornik, for war crimes committed in the Municipal Offence Court building and “Novi izvor” factory in Zvornik.
The retrial of Damir Brekalo, Marko Radic, Dragan Sunjic and Mirko Vracevic, who are charged with crimes committed against Bosniaks in the Vojno detention camp, near Mostar, is due to continue on Monday next week.
The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina pronounced a first instance verdict in 2009, sentencing the four indictees to a total of 80 years in prison. The Appellate Chamber upheld the appeals filed by the Defence teams. The retrial began in July 2010.
On Tuesday, September 7, the trial is due to continue in the case of Alija Osmic, former member of the Military Police Unit with the 307th Brigade of the ABiH, who is charged with participation in crimes against Bosnian Croats from Bugojno committed in 1993 and 1994.
Nisvet Gasal, Musajb Kukavica, Enes Handzic and Senad Dautovic are charged with participation in the same crimes. Their trial is due to continue on September 8.
The Prosecution alleges that Gasal and Kukavica participated in the operation of the “Iskra” stadium detention camp in Bugojno, in which about 300 Croat civilians were detained. The Prosecution considers that Handzic was Assistant Commander for Security with the 307th ABiH Brigade and Dautovic was a member of the Joint ABiH Command at that time.
The continuation of the trial of former VRS members Dusan Jevic, Mendeljev Djuric, Nedjo Ikonic and Goran Markovic, who are charged with genocide committed in Srebrenica, is scheduled for September 6.
