23 August 2010  The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has accepted a guilty plea from Elvir Jakupovic and sentenced him to five years in prison.

Jakupovic, a former member of the First Company with the First Battalion of the 17th Krajiska Brigade with the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was sentenced for war crimes against prisoners of war committed in the Travnik municipality. He was charged with killing a detained member of the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, in the village of Slimena in June 1993.

"The court has determined that the proposed sentence is adequate to the indictee’s responsibility and committed crimes. When it made its decision concerning the sentence, the court considered the fact that the indictee was young, he expressed regrets, he is a family man and a father of two. Despite the fact that his life after the commission of the crime has not been praiseworthy, he can still become a decent parent of his two kids,” said the trial chamber chairman Senadin Bektasevic.

Jakupovic is currently serving a sentence in Banja Luka for drug abuse.

He reached a plea agreement on July 8 and agreed to being sentenced to between five and six years in prison and giving a statement to victims expressing his regret.

"What can I say. I am guilty, and there is no doubt about it. Irrespective of the fact that I was young at the time, I am really sorry for what I did,” said Jakupovic who was 17 years old at the time.

Prosecutors presented 22 pieces of material evidence at the hearing supporting the allegations contained in the indictment.

“He was minor at the time. He expressed his sincere regrets. The indictee admitted guilt, contributing to the fast and efficient completion of this case. We consider the proposed sentence fully corresponds to these circumstances,” said prosecutor Slavica Terzic.
