Week ahead: Preparations for Cerim Novalic's Trial

12 March 2010  Next week a pre-trial status conference is due to take place before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the case of Cerim Novalic, who is charged with crimes committed in Konjic municipality.

 

The status conference is due to take place on Friday, March 19, 2010. The former member of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina pleaded not guilty, at the beginning of February, to the allegations charging him with the rape of a woman, whom he threatened by saying he would "kill her if she screamed", in a village in Konjic municipality in September 1992.  

On Monday, March 15 appeals will be presented before the Appellate Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina pertaining to the first instance verdict sentencing Marko Radic, Dragan Sunjic, Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic, former members of the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, to a total of 80 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed in Vojno detention camp, near Mostar.

On the same day a pre-retrial status conference is due to take place before the Appellate Chamber in the case of Sefik Alic, former Assistant Commander of "Hamze" Battalion with the Fifth Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who was acquitted, by a first instance verdict, of the charges that he committed crimes against prisoners-of-war from the Bosanska Krajina region in August 1995.

In October last year the Appellate Chamber upheld the State Prosecution's appeal, revoked the first instance verdict and ordered a retrial.

The Defence of Suljo Karajic, former Commander of the Second Military Police Squad with the 505th Brigade of the Fifth Corps with the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ABiH, who is charged with crimes against civilians and prisoners-of-war committed in the "Bihac District", is due to continue presenting its closing arguments on Friday, March 19.   

On March 16 and 17 the Defence of Gojko Klickovic is due to continue presenting evidence. Klickovic, Mladen Drljaca and Jovan Ostojic are charged with crimes committed in the Bosanska Krupa area during 1992.

On the same days and on March 18 and 19 the retrial of Milos Stupar is due to continue. In 2008 Stupar was sentenced, by a first instance verdict, to 40 years in prison for genocide committed in Srebrenica.

On Monday, March 15 and Tuesday, March 16 the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina is due to consider the guilt admission agreement signed between Ljubisa Cetic and the State Prosecution. Cetic admitted participation in the shooting of about 200 civilians from Prijedor at Koricanske stijene on August 21, 1992. In addition to Cetic, Zoran Babic, Milorad Radakovic, Milorad Skrbic, Dusan Jankovic and Zeljko Stojnic are charged with this crime.

Two days later the trial is due to continue in the case of Sasa Zecevic, Radoslav Knezevic, Marinko Ljepoja, Petar Civcic and Branko Topola, who are charged with the same crime.

On Monday, March 15 new Prosecution witnesses are due to testify at the trial of Momir Pelemis and Slavko Peric, who are charged with genocide committed in Srebrenica, and Vinko Kondic, Bosko Lukic and Marko Adamovic, who are charged with crimes committed in the Kljuc area. The latter trial continues on Wednesday, March 17.

On Wednesday, March 17 the trial is due to continue in the case of Mehura Selimovic, Adil Ruznic and Emir Mustafic, who are charged with having supported and abetted the detention of civilians and prisoners-of-war in Bihac, Cazin and Bosanski Petrovac municipalities.

On Thursday, March 18 the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina is due to continue presenting evidence against Zeljko Ivanovic, who is charged with genocide committed in Srebrenica, and Darko Dolic, a former HVO member, who is charged with crimes committed in Prozor municipality.

The trial of Radoje Lalovic and Soniboj Skiljevic is due to continue on Wednesday and Thursday next week, when the second indictee's witnesses will be examined. The two indictees are charged with crimes committed in Kula Penal and Correctional Facility, near Sarajevo.

On Thursday new Prosecution witnesses are due to appear before the Court and testify about crimes against Croats who were detained in detention camps in Bugojno. The crimes are charged upon Alija Osmic, a former military policeman with the 307th Brigade of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
