02 December 2009 Forensic molecular biology experts from Sarajevo and Belgrade confirm that DNA analysis shows that Radovan Stankovic's fingerprints can be found on several objects introduced by the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the course of evidence presentation.
As indicated in the findings presented by court expert Rijad Konjhodzic, who testified for the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, two pieces of adhesive bands and one pair of hygienic gloves contained biological traces belonging to indictee Ranko Stankovic, who is on trial for having helped his brother Radovan Stankovic escape from Foca Penal and Correctional Facility.
After the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina found him guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed in the Foca area in 1992, Radovan Stankovic escaped from the Foca prison on May 25, 2007.
Stankovic was convicted, as a member of the Miljevina Battalion with the Foca Tactical Brigade of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, for having been one of the organizers and supervisors of the so-called "Karaman kuca" in Foca, which served as a detention center for women, young women and girls.
Ten people are charged with having helped him escape.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina charges Mile Krsmanovic, Miroslav Blagojevic, Zdravko Vreco, Dragan Masic, Srdjan Vilotic, Miro Prodanovic and Goran Milosevic with "dishonest service", Brankica Davidovic and Ranka Dragicevic with "falsification of documents", and Ranko Stankovic, the escaped convict's brother, with "enabling the person deprived of liberty to escape".
Dusan Keckarevic, a molecular forensic expert from Belgrade, confirmed that, after having examined a bag and a lighter, found in a "Golf 3" vehicle, which was used by Stankovic when he fled from the prison, he determined the identity of two male individuals, whose DNA was found on those objects. It was not mentioned who the two individuals were.
"This type of analysis is very precise. It is correct in 99 percent of cases. My conclusion is that the mentioned objects contained DNA marks belonging to two male individuals, but it was not possible to determine when the marks on the lighter and bag were made," Keckarevic said.
The indictment alleges that, between May 23 and 25, 2007 Ranko Stankovic obtained an automobile, "as per a previous agreement with his brother Radovan". It further alleges that, on May 25 the car, with a driver, was parked in front of the Dentistry Faculty in Foca, to which the convict had been taken for a tooth x-ray, on the basis of a referral letter written by Dr Brankica Davidovic.
Nada Mandic, Defence attorney of Ranko Stankovic, denied the relevance of the forensic reports, arguing that they cannot be relevant because they were made in another state.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina completed its evidence presentation with the testimonies of the forensic experts and the introduction of more than 50 pieces of material evidence. The Defence of the indictees asked the Court to undertake "a reconstruction of events" at the location from which
Stankovic fled.
The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina will set the date for continuation of this trial at a later stage.
