18 May 2009 The State Prosecution announces that legal teams representing the victims may present their closing arguments at the end of the trial for genocide in Srebrenica, conducted before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced that six out of 19 legal teams, representing the victims' families at the trial of Milorad Trbic, would like to present closing arguments. It is understood that several other teams may wish to do the same. The Prosecution will contact them again and inform the Court of their intentions.
This is the first time the Prosecution has invited victims' families to submit legal and property claims and become involved in the trial in this way.
Milorad Trbic is charged, as Assistant Commander for Security with the Zvornik Brigade of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, with having participated in the execution of more than 7,000 Bosniaks in Srebrenica in July 1995.
The Prosecution indicated that it will need more time to translate closing arguments from English to local language, as the current version of the text contains 300 pages.
"We hope that the translation can be done by June 12," Prosecutor Dubravko Campara said, on behalf of competent Prosecutor Kwai Hong Ip.
The Defence asked the Court to let it present its closing arguments seven days after the Prosecution, which would enable it "to prepare itself".
Trial Chamber Chairman Davorin Jukic said a letter from the Hague Tribunal to the Criminal Defence Section concerning Trbic's legal status would be introduced in the case files.
"This letter confirms that indictee Trbic stayed in the Witness Protection Section of the Hague Tribunal from October 24, 2003 to April 7, 2005," Jukic said.
Milorad Trbic was originally indicted before the ICTY, but, as per a request filed by the Hague Prosecution, in June 2007 the case was referred to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for further processing. The trial began in late 2007.
At the end of this status conference the Prosecution proposed the introduction of additional material evidence. Due to the fact that the evidence is "of a confidential nature", the public was excluded from that part of the conference.
The trial is due to continue on May 22, 2009.
