11 November 2008 Those charged with helping Radovan Stankovic escape from prison pleaded not guilty before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The indictees denied the allegations in the indictment charging Mile Krsmanovic, Miroslav Blagojevic, Zdravko Vreco, Dragan Masic, Srdjan Vilotic, Miro Prodanovic and Goran Milosevic with "unprincipled performance of duties", Brankica Davidovic and Ranka Dragicevic with "forging personal documents", and Ranko Stankovic, the fugitive's brother, with "helping a person, deprived of liberty, flee".
On May 25, 2007 Stankovic fled from the prison in Foca, where he had been sent one month earlier to serve a 20-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity.
In April 2007 the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina found Radovan Stankovic guilty, as a member of the Miljevina Battalion of the Foca Tactical Brigade with the Republika Srpska Army, of having participated in crimes against civilians from Foca Municipality in 1992.
Stankovic was one of the organizers and
supervisors of the so-called "Karaman kuca", which served as a female detention center. Serb soldiers referred to it as a "brothel".
After Stankovic escaped, the State Investigation and Protection Agency, SIPA, and the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina opened an investigation. In September 2008 the Court confirmed the indictment against ten individuals connected to the event.
The indictment alleges that between May 23 and 25, 2007 Ranko Stankovic purchased an automobile, "as per a previous agreement with his brother Radovan". On May 25 a driver parked the car in front of the Dental Medicine Faculty in Foca where Radovan Stankovic was taken to have his teeth x-rayed following a referral by Dr Brankica Davidovic.
"Guards Zdravko Vreco, Dragan Masic and Srdjan Vilotic, who guarded, accompanied and escorted the convicted person, failed to undertake the necessary measures and activities in order to escort the person in a secure manner," the indictment alleges.
Miro Prodanovic and Goran Milosevic, who, according to the indictment, were in a separate vehicle, "did not even come out of the official vehicle or try to prevent Radovan Stankovic from escaping," while Mile Krsmanovic, assistant director for security of the Foca Prison Security Service, failed to organize the work of this service in such a manner as to prevent eventual escape.
