07 October 2008 A former detainee from Hadzici speaks about the torture he suffered after having been captured.
Armin Becirevic, who testified as a Prosecution witness at
the trial of Rade Veselinovic, said that he was a victim of sexual abuse in the
sports hall in Hadzici, to which he was brought on May 5, 1992.
"We first had to kneel and raise our hands above our heads. They cut some
people with knives, while a person named Jaca poured salt on their wounds. After
that Jaca singled out a few younger boys, including me. She first forced one of
us to take his clothes off and then she forced another boy to lick his genital
organ and put it into his mouth," Becirevic said.
The witness claims that he "did not see indictee Rade
Veselinovic" in the sports hall in Hadzici while all this was happening, adding
that he was not the one who had captured him.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina charges Rade Veselinovic, as
member of the Military Police Squad with the Republika Srpska Army, with having
participated in the "murder, forcible resettlement, capture and causing of suffering
and bodily injuries" to the non-Serbian population from Hadzici municipality.
However, the witness said that Veselinovic brought his father, who had
been beaten up, to the sports hall. As explained by ths witness, his father held
his hands on his eyes and "screamed so much that I thought that his eyes had
been taken out".
The witness was taken from the sports hall to Lukavica, where he was
"beaten up for 48 hours".
"When we were brought there, we had to enter two rooms after having
passed between two lines of soldiers, who hit us using all kinds of objects.
After that, we had to leave the room and go to the corridor, saying our name and
last name. Then they took us to the toilet and beat us up as hard as they
could. But still, we had to get up and run back to the room," Becirevic said.
He recalled that they separated some detainees on this occasion, adding
that 48 persons, "whose names were on some list", were taken to another room,
where they were beaten so hard that "one could not stand listening to their
screams". The witness claims to have seen "blood stains on the walls" in that
room later on.
Becirevic was transferred from the barracks in Lukavica to the Kula
prison in eastern Sarajevo, where he was detained in a room, together with 80
other persons. Detainees were taken from Kula to other locations to perform
forced labour, like digging trenches, carrying bags, building bunkers and so
on.
Describing Jaca, who abused him in Hadzici, Becirevic said that she was
from Sokolovic kolonija, adding that she was thin, "with multicoloured hair,
ranging from red to blue", referring to her as "a cornfield
scarecrow".
The witness was released after an exchange.
Second Prosecution witness Aisa Dzebo said that her husband Nusret was
taken away from Binjezevo village. She claims that he was taken away by Rade
Veselinovic, who detained him in the sports hall in Hadzici.
"Veselinovic and one more person came. He told my
husband: Let's go, carrion! The other person told my husband to get dressed and
to bring a blanket with him. Then they took him away," Dzebo said, adding that
Veselinovic wanted to take her as well, but "this other man, whom I do not
know", did not let him take her.
After having been transferred from the sports hall to Kula, Aisa's
husband was exchanged.
The
trial is due to continue on October 8.
