Kujundzic: Ten hours of mistreatment

19 September 2008  Another Prosecution witness describes how he managed to survive when he was used as a human shield in Doboj, also describing how he was mistreated in the "Percin disko".

Hasan Mustafic said that some people, dressed in camouflage uniforms, wearing hats, captured him in June 1992. Others told him that they were members of "Predini vukovi" ("Predo's Wolves").

"They took us to military hangars near Bosanka. They were allegedly members of 'Predini vukovi'. I had heard about them earlier, but I am not sure if they were members of that Unit. We stayed there for about ten days, before being transferred up there to Perco's. There were probably about 180 or 200 of us. I stayed there for about two months," the witness recalled.

Mustafic testified as Prosecution witness at the trial of Predrag Kujundzic, who is charged, as commander of "Predini vukovi" Unit, with having committed crimes against Bosniak and Croatian civilians in Doboj municipality.

The indictment alleges that "Predini vukovi" members detained the civilians in "Percin disko" detention camp, in which they were exposed to physical and mental abuse on a daily basis, while some of them were even killed.

"On St. Peter's Day, July 12, some people, with hats, came and asked 50 of us to go out. They ordered us to take our clothes off from our waists up. They made groups of 10 of us. They said that nobody should bend down, as they would be shot otherwise. They shot one man, as a demonstration. They started shooting from both sides. Bullets were flying around our heads, like bees," Mustafic said.

One of the eight counts in the indictment against Kujundzic alleges that he and other Units of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, participated in the taking of 50 prisoners from "Percn disko" detention camp on July 12, 1992. They allegedly "used the civilians as human shields" in Makljenovac village in the course of military operations. At least 16 people were killed on that occasion.

Mustafic said that he managed to survive because some soldiers asked him and other prisoners to carry their commander, who was wounded. Mustafic said that they were then returned to "Percin disko".

"The following morning ten people, wearing red berets, came. At 7 a.m. they started beating us using various objects. It lasted until 5 p.m. They hit me twice with a chair leg on my head. They did not beat me much. In the evening they said that any blood stains were to be cleaned," the witness said, adding that, after that day, nobody mistreated him in "Percin disko".

The trial is due to continue on September 16.
