10 September 2008 A statement where Miroslav Deronjic tells the Hague Tribunal that Karadzic told him how all the civilians in Srebrenica have to be killed, is read out at the trial.
In the continuation of the trial of
the four former members of the Military police in the Bratunac brigade of the Army of Republica
Srpska, the State Prosecution read the statement of Hague convict Miroslav Deronjic.
''I went to Pale on 9th July
1995 in order to talk with Radovan Karadzic. He told me that there is two existing
plans for Srebrenica, the first one is entering and the military occupation of the town and the second
is the opening of road traffic on the south side. Concerning civilians
he said that all of them need to be killed,'' as was written in Deronjic's statement
that he gave to The Hague on 25th November 2003.
For the security of the buses
in which captured men from Srebrenica were transported and imprisoned in
Bratunac school, the prosecution held responsible Zdravko Bozic, Mladen
Blagojevic, Zeljko Zaric and Zoran Zivanovic.
At the Hague Tribunal, Deronjic
addmited guilt for the crimes committed against people from Srebrenica and was
convicted to ten years' imprisonment. He died serving his sentence in a Swedish
prison.
Radovan Karadzic's trial should
start soon in front of the Hague Tribunal. The former leader of the Bosnian Serbs is
indicted for genocide, crimes against humanity and other crimes committed on the
territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Deronjic's statement that
he gave in July 1995, it stands that he was ''a civilian commissar for the
Bratunac
and Srebrenica area''. His task was to inform Karadzic about the events in and
around the protected enclave of Srebrenica.
''After the fall of Srebrenica on
11th July 1995, Karadzic told me that my task is to meet Ratko Mladic and Muslim representatives in order to consider the possibilities for civilians. I informed him later, that all of the
civilians wanted to leave Srebrenica as
soon as possible,'' stated Deronjic.
Since the men were separated
from the women and children in Potocari and transported and imprisoned in school
and in the stadium in Bratunac, Deronjic stated that Ljubisa Beara, from his office,
relayed to him an order ''from the top'' to ''kill the prisoners''.
Ljubisa Beara is indicted in
Hague Tribunal for crimes committed in the Srebrenica area and Defence evidence
procedure is ongoing.
''While Beara was in my office, the
meeting was interrupted several times. Among other people Milan Lukic, for
which I knew he is known by his murders,
was looking for him. I told Beara that there must not be
no liquidation of the prisoners and that they will be transported into
the prisons,'' stated Deronjic
Milan Lukic, a former leader of
paramilitary ''White eagles'' or ''Avengers'' unit is indicted in
front of the Hague Tribunal for crimes committed in the wider area around
Visegrad.
After the meeting with the
Beara, Deronjic, according to the statement, met Karadzic and informed him that
around 20,000 Bosniaks were transported towards Kladanj and that the Military police
was conducting this together with one or two UNPROFOR vehicles. He claims he told Karadzic that Beara said all prisoners have to be killed, and he shortly
commented, ''all of these soldiers are fools.''
After the meeting, Deronjic
stated that the murders occured in Kravica village and that there were
bodies and corpses around the Bratunac school.
During the trial, the state
prosecution disclosed a couple of addition material evidence out of which
the majority refers to documents of the Republika Srpska Army headquarters in which there is data on
the humanitarian relief regime for the Srebrenica area.
The trial continues on 11 September.
