18 July 2008 A former member of the HVO Brigade Military Police appears as a Defence witness and claims that he "did not know" that there was a prison in Vojno.
Miroslav Sunjic, former commander of the Brigade Military Police Squad with the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, which was situated in Bijelo polje area from July to September 1993, said that he was not aware of the existence of a prison in Vojno, near Mostar.
This witness testified as Dragan Sunjic's Defence witness. He confirmed that Sunjic was a member of the Active HVO Military Police forces, "which controlled the checkpoints in the Bijelo polje area."
The Prosecution charges Dragan Sunjic, Marko Radic, Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic with the establishment and events in Vojno prison, in which Bosniak civilians were detained. The indictment alleges that detainees were mistreated, killed, abused, forced to perform hard labour and raped.
The witness said that he used to pass through Vojno on his "way to the frontlines."
When asked by the Defence if Dragan Sunjic performed any function in Vojno, the witness responded by saying that he "does not know", adding that he could not remember.
"I do not think he had any function at all," witness Sunjic said.
The indictment, filed by the State Prosecution, alleges that Sunjic was deputy manager of Vojno prison.
In the course of direct examination witness Sunjic said that the Brigade's and Active Military Police Unit "withdrew" to Mostar in September. They continued conducting their operations in Mostar until April 1994, when the Second Guarding and Reconnaissance Brigade was formed. Indictee Sunjic was a member of that Brigade.
The trial is due to continue on August 18, 2008.
