06 March 2007 On Thursday 15 February, members of the Association of Reporters of the Court of BiH (AIS) held their 10th meeting, the first of 2007. They discussed relations between the press and the judiciary and plans for future activities.
Representatives of BIRN BiH and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and court reporters of BH Radio 1, the FTV, and the Justice Report agency attended the meeting.
The participants reached a general conclusion that the court's public information department, the prosecutor's office, the AIS and reporters should work together to improve the level of their cooperation.
Members of the AIS agreed that it was necessary to set up a meeting with court officials to discuss again ways to improve the work of the public information department, and to improve the media's relationship with this institution as well, with the aim of providing better information to the public.
Members of the association were informed about activities to increase media responsibility in reporting on court proceedings. Presented were amendments to Article 10 of the Press Council Code and the AIS-drafted recommendations for journalists reporting on war crimes trials.
It was agreed that the AIS should define its position and start lobbying the public and influential institutions for improving the release of information from trials, and press reporting on the activities of the BiH Court and other courts conducting war crimes trials.
This issue will also be discussed at meetings in Sarajevo, Mostar, Bijeljina and Banja Luka. These meetings will be attended by members of the AIS, local media, members of the Press Council and the Association of Journalists, and local and regional court officials.
It was proudly noted that the internationally renowned Human Rights Watch, in its February 2007 report, included the AIS and BIRN suggestions on how to improve communication between the media and the BiH court.
AIS was created in 2005. Its goal is to conduct coordinated efforts to familiarise the public with the activities of the BiH court and prosecutor's office. AIS activities are supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation as part of the BIRN BiH project entitled "Media, Civil Society and War Crimes Trials."
