17 January 2007 On Wednesday, December 27, the Association of Reporters reporting from Court of BiH (AIS) held its ninth meeting, the last in 2006, in Sarajevo. They discussed achievements from last year and plans for the future.
The meeting was attended by representatives of BIRN BiH, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, as well as journalists and court reporters representing the following news agencies: BH Radio 1, FTV, Glas Srpske, San, and Justice Report.
The general conclusion of the meeting was that cooperation between the Bosnian court's public affairs department, state prosecution, AIS and reporters is not always achieved to mutual satisfaction.
Regardless of the fact that AIS has warned on multiple occasions of the several problems in this relationship, all with the objective of improving public information, and offered multiple suggestions for possible changes, not much has actually been achieved.
It was noticed that information regarding pressing of charges, prolonging of detention and dates of hearings arrive late, and that the schedule of trials is not regularly updated.
Members of AIS concluded that incomplete and untimely information creates confusion and causes numerous problems for news agencies. The final result is reflected in the fact that the public does not have
correct information.
It was noted that the request that was sent to court representatives to establish a regular press briefing, which would certainly facilitate the work of journalists, was never acted upon.
Members of the association were briefed on activities conducted thus far on accepting the amendment to article 10 of the Council for Press and Recommendation Development Code, an activity that involves AIS members. The proposed changes have not been fully agreed upon, but it is expected that that will take place soon.
The Association of Court Reporters was founded in 2005 in order to inform the public of the activities conducted by the court and prosecution of BiH in a coordinated manner. AIS is financially supported by Konrad Adenauer Foundation as part of the "Media, civil society and war crimes trials" project of BIRN BiH.
Justice Report is a
