Improving cooperation between media and judiciary

17 November 2008  The third debate meeting was held in Brcko District, at which it was concluded that it was necessary to improve cooperation between the media and judiciary.

At the third meeting on "The Transparency of work of district and cantonal courts and prosecutions and objective reporting", which was held in the District of Brcko, representatives of the media and judicial institutions stressed that they would invest efforts in improving cooperation in order to acquaint the public with war crimes investigations.

The one-day debate meeting, held in Brcko District in early November 2008, is part of a series of meetings, convened by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in cooperation with the Balkans Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN BiH) and Association of Court Reporters (AIS).

The aim of these meetings is acquainting the general public in the country with the work of judicial institutions, as well as pointing to the need for objective and unbiased reporting by the media on cases conducted before regional and cantonal courts.

Meetings with the media and judiciary representatives were already held in Doboj and Trebinje in the first half of 2008.

Representatives of the printed and electronic media, who participated at the debate meeting in Brcko, say that, due to the lack of journalists who are specialised in war crime trials reporting, they do not often follow the trials conducted before the Basic and Appellate Courts.

In addition, they mentioned that it was necessary for the judicial organs to be more transparent in their work, making it easier for the media to inform the public on the work of those institutions in an adequate manner.

Judicial representatives said that they would improve their cooperation with the media in the future because the public had to be informed about the work of those institutions.

During the course of the meeting, a Public Prosecution official said that this institution had not built a clear mechanism for cooperation with its spokesperson, which may have caused gaps in the cooperation with the media up to date.

Representatives of the judiciary said that they would discuss the proposal, made by the media concerning improvement of cooperation, at an internal meeting of judicial institutions in Brcko District.

It is planned that the next debate meeting will take place in Travnik in early December 2008.
