Selma Učanbarlić, Fall 2009 intern with BIRN BiH

The initial lessons were related to objective and reliable reporting from the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I also became familiar with a specialized writing style that I had not had a chance to practice before. My regular attendance at trials helped me master news writing.
In addition, my attendance at conferences helped me familiarize myself with other issues related to war-crimes trials conducted before local courts.
My regular visits to the State Court, together with BIRN journalists, helped me get a clearer view of what takes place at the War Crimes Chamber and improve my understanding of the implementation of transitional justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the functioning of judicial institutions and the way the media treats this issue.
The generous help of all BIRN journalists enabled me to get acquainted with writing reports, reviews and analyses, as well as preparing radio magazines. I would particularly mention their openness to any kind of suggestion and question, as well as an extremely pleasant working environment, which also offers an opportunity for constant learning.
I consider the internship to have been extremely useful, as I have developed qualitative grounds for my future work, while gaining a new perspective on serious and professional journalism.
