Court of Appeal at The Hague: UN Immunity is in Public Interest

30 March 2010

The Court of Appeal at The Hague has rejected a complaint of the `Mothers of Srebrenica` seeking to hold the United Nations (UN) accountable for the genocide in 1995. The ruling represents a setback for the organization acting on behalf of 6,000 relatives of victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.

OSCE: Safe Environment for Witnesses

14 December 2009  It is necessary to start implementing the War Crimes Processing Strategy in Bosnia and Herzegovina as soon as possible - this is the conclusion teached by participants at a round table on establishing a system for psycho-social support for witnesses and victims in war-crimes cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina, held on Mount Jahorina on December 3 and 4.

A Well-Rounded Experience

04 August 2009  During my internship with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, I have learned more about transitional justice and journalism than I ever predicted. The internship provided me with many opportunities to immerse myself in the justice system, while also providing me with a significant amount of time to pursue my own interests.

Experience Above and Beyond Expectations

01 July 2009  "BIRN gave me a remarkable amount of independence and responsibility, allowing me to essentially dive head first into a stream of fascinating events and personages. The internship’s latitude and the expectation of quality reporting mean an amazing potential for any number of projects relating to the Balkans." - Conor Gaffney, BIRN intern, summer 2007

A Prayer for Srebrenica Victimes

14 July 2009  Looking through the lens of my camera, I found a sea of people. Tens of thousands had gathered to pay respects to the 534 people being buried and to remember the tragedy that had occurred 14 years before. They had overfilled busses and persisted despite the rain.

A More Complete Version of the Truth

01 June 2009  Most Americans my age can’t tell you that Bosnia is in Eastern Europe. Those who actually paid attention in history class could probably do that, and the really good students might even remember that there was a war at some point in the nineties. But students who pay that much attention seem to be few and far between.
