OSCE Extends Support to Radio Justice Project

02 September 2008  The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has given a 10,000 Euro grant to support Radio Justice, an initiative of the non-governmental organization BIRN (Balkan Investigative Reporting Network).

Radio Justice seeks to increase public awareness and understanding of the war crimes prosecutions and related judicial issues by producing brief, topical radio reports in the local language. The reports are distributed daily, free of charge, to more than 100 local, regional, and Diaspora-based radio stations to be featured in the hourly news programmes. They are also available for download in audio and written form on BIRN’s website at http://www.bim.ba/.

Justice Report signifies an important and much needed contribution to inform the public discussion about the accountability for war crimes and the fight against impunity in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said James Rodehaver, Director of the OSCE Human Rights Department. “And now that contribution will reach a much greater audience through the airwaves.”

The launch of a sustained Radio Justice by BIRN follows the success of a pilot project sponsored by the OSCE Mission to BiH in 2007. BIRN was then reporting on the progress and setbacks in processing war crimes before courts throughout the country.

“BIRN’s coverage of war crimes trials displays both the impartiality of the organization and its specialist knowledge,” said Stephanie Barbour, a Legal Adviser with the OSCE Mission. “All citizens of BiH know that they can rely on BIRN’s reports as truthful and their analysis as fair – and that is what is sorely needed.”

Radio Justice
is in part supported by a contribution from the National Endowment for Democracy.
